Vega, from object to series
The Italian design from the 20th century is widely known for the high quality achieved by any project released during this period. However, in such a long and varied period of time, there must have been some ideas and objects that have not succeeded to overcome the passing of time and to become "classics". Some of these less fortunate results are, for sure, those related to the Postmodernism of the 1970s and 1980s. Its experimental impulse of the early years, aimed at freeing design from the strict functionalist rigour, ended up shifting towards historicist formalisms, chromatic clashes and banal designs.
Nevertheless, it is interesting to remember that, even in this period, it is possible to find important exceptions to the rule: designs that managed to achieve the recognition granted to timeless creations. Most of these exceptions are characterised by the introduction of open and experimental concepts of the time, even if always based in the search for quality and the essential functionalist rigour. The table lamp Vega, designed for Vistosi by Michele De Lucchi in 1982, is one of the designs which are still highly recognized.
Michele De Lucchi's works
Michele De Lucchi was born in Ferrara in 1951 and graduated in architecture in Florence. Along with his works in this field he also developed an intense activity as a lamp and furniture designer, creating some very recognizable designs such as the emblematic lamps Tolomeo (1987) or Logico (2001), or the radical but more controversial chair First (1983). He developed his activity for several prestigious brands in the field of lamp production (Artemide, FontanaArte, iGuzzini, Vistosi), furniture (Alias, Unifor, Vitra) or technology (Compaq Computers, Olivetti, Philips, Siemens). His studio, aMDL, is located in Milan and is still active today. His work includes a wide variety of particular items characterized by the personal application of playful aspects to functional objects.
Vega is an example of these two concepts that Michele De Lucchi tries to combine: on one hand it design responds to the possible functional needs with a clean, timeless and essential design, with no unnecessary elements, based on geometry and the knowledge of the capability of the material provided by the producer company. On the other, through colour it tries to introduce an apparently light character, perfect for leaving solemnity out and for showing different solutions for the blending of the light, all within a piece of decorative lighting realized in Murano glass.
A new edition of the Vega lamp
The initial table lamp, with a yellow or purple diffuser, was designed for Vistosi in 1982 and was available in its catalogue until 1985. From 1986 to 1993 the designed was included in the FontanaArte catalogue, which offered three less colourful versions which combined the shades of blue, grey and black.
In 2007 Vistosi brought it back into its catalogue, this time in a version revised by De Lucchi himself who, together with Alberto Nason, converted it into a series. This new design is a functional, aesthetic and technical update. Vega is presented in three versions (table, floor and wall), each of them available in three colour options, two bright (combinations of yellow, green and blue) and one in neutral white, and finally with the possibility of choosing the light source: incandescent, low consumption or LED.
Vega is characterized by technical flexibility, quality production and versatile application, both for personal and professional contexts, and at the same time its design does not condition the character of the space. For this reason the Vega series can be considered as a real classic design, high above the general level of the products of the period to which it belongs.
