Poc: a glass marble turned into light

Creating a charming lamp sometimes means taking the hard path. But if the outcome is a product such as Poc, it's well worth the effort of giving shape to its fairness, whose secret is the internal membrane.

Giving shape to uniqueness: the stages of glass-making

In order to figure out how she could endow light with a peculiar effect by exploiting the structure of the lamp itself, Barbara Maggiolo, its designer, has analysed the techniques to produce Murano-glass objects. The process by which this lamp reaches its final shape is quite a long and challenging one: as well as being blown, the glass needs to be repeatedly flattened and revolved.

But, first of all, two or three differently-coloured types of glass must merge.

Poc is indeed always characterised by a crystal-coloured layer, to which either one or two layers are added: in the former case, the second colour can be either black or white; in the latter, the lamp is made up of a white, a crystal and a black layer. A crystal layer is part of each of the versions, because it corresponds to the internal membrane. The method by which this layer is produced was already known in the field of Murano-glass working, but it had neither been applied to spheres before, or to get such definite lines: this is why it counts among Vistosi's patents.

And what makes each of these lamps unequalled is the knotty matching of distinct types of glass: the membrane, almost as if a lense had been put in the middle of it, gives the illusion of a sphere consisting of two halves; thanks to the different glass types, the lamp suits commercial, but also domestic interiors, due to their soberness, as well as to the simplicity and perfection of the spherical shape.

And its versatility earns another point for being available in various sizes and versions: both modern and classic interiors can therefore relish its light, whose intensity changes according to the waves of the membrane.

The dynamism and the elegance of marbles

The light is therefore sprightly, just as the lines characterising the surface of Poc, making it similar to a marble, with its ever-changing and unique shades. The threads that trim marbles narrow and widen on them like a snapshot of the northern lights: this is the same image coming to one's mind while looking at Poc, Vistosi's marble, because its membrane always turns out to have a different height and width. But, with respect to marbles, it has that little bit extra that brings these threads to life: light.
